December 13

12-13

Celery Soup
Dinner Biscuits
Roast Turkey, Chestnut Stuffing
*Cranberry Frappé
Franconia Sweet Potatoes
Mashed Turnips
Ginger Sponge
Wafer Crackers
Edam Cheese
Café Noir

In 1914 December 13 was a Sunday.

I couldn’t find a specific recipe for Dinner Biscuits, perhaps Baking Powder Biscuits would work.

November 24

11-24

Baked Beans
Chow Chow
Clover Leaf Biscuits
Fruit Salad, *Astoria Dressing
Wafer Crackers
Walnut Deceits
Washington Pie

In 1914 November 24 was a Tuesday.

Clover Leaf Biscuits are just Parker House Rolls with an extra tablespoon of butter in the dough and shaped like clover leaves.

It kind of makes me laugh that yesterday we had Waldorf Salad and today we have Astoria Dressing.

There are a couple of recipes for fruit salad intended to be served as a salad rather than a dessert, like this one or this one.

September 12

09-12

Corn Soup
Crisp Crackers
Creamed Halibut
Pimiento Ribbons
Quick Dinner Biscuits
Cucumber Boats, *Sauce Tartare
Peach Cottage Pudding, Foamy Sauce

In 1914 September 12 was a Saturday. Here’s the fish I thought we would have had on Friday. I’m guessing that Creamed Halibut is the same recipe as Creamed Fish in Scallop Shells, just in a baking dish.

July 20

07-20

Corn Soup
Toasted Triangles
*Ham Mousse
Dressed Cucumbers
Emergency Dinner Biscuits
Watermelon Slices
Lord Baltimore Cake

In 1914 July 20 was a Monday. As is typical, we’re using yesterday’s leftover ham.

Emergency Biscuits are what I would call drop biscuits.

Lord Baltimore Cake is the counterpart to Lady Baltimore Cake. His cake uses the egg yolks left over from the egg whites in her cake.

July 11

07-11

Duchess Soup
Imperial Crusts
Boiled Ham
Baked Macaroni
Quick Dinner Biscuits
*Fruit Salad
Cream Sponge Cake

In 1914 July 11 was a Saturday.

The only real difference I can see between Imperial Crusts and Imperial Sticks is that the Sticks are buttered before toasting and the crusts aren’t.

May 16

05-16
Roasted Hamburg Steak
Baked Potatoes
*Quick Dinner Biscuits
Lettuce and String Bean Salad
Cheese Sandwiches
Coffee Soufflé

In 1914 May 16 was a Saturday.

Gem pans are like muffin tins, but shallower. They’re made of cast iron and the compartments have spaces between for more even heat circulation. The design was patented by Nathaniel Waterman of Boston in 1859.
